A STRATEGIC SECTOR FOR THE NATIONAL ECONOMY AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The national sugar sector holds a strategic position through its contribution to the country’s food security in terms of sugar, to job creation in the agricultural and industrial areas, to the emergence of regional development hubs as well as to farmer income improvement and dairy farming development. This activity generates 2,000 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs in the industry and ensures an income for 80,000 sugar beet and sugar cane farmers. Refining of imported raw sugar is a real added value for the sector, insofar as it enables to supplement the market supply for this commodity.
